About me

My career in education spans four decades – ten years as a pre-primary and primary school teacher and thirty years as a teacher educator.

I specialise in literacy in democratic citizenship education and continues to publish articles in accredited journals and release scholarly books on children’s experiences of their citizenship in democratic South Africa. My textbooks on literacy for the foundation phase are used by most higher education institutions in South Africa. I have supervised various postgraduate studies in these subjects.

In 2018 I was awarded a special achievement award for the promotion of Afrikaans in Early Childhood Education by the South African Academy for Science and Art. I am regularly invited by the Afrikaans Language Board to present talks about my specialist subject. I am a member of the World Education Research Association and serve on the management committee of the South African Research Association of Early Childhood Education (SARAECE).
